“On the twenty-third day of the month of September, in an early year of a decade not too long before our own, the human race suddenly encountered a deadly threat to its very existence. And this terrifying enemy surfaced, as such enemies often do, in the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places…”
Out of genuine curiosity, what do y’all think makes one wlw ship feel “rushed” in comparison to others? I ask because I’ve seen posts floating around about it over the past few months for various ships and it got me wondering – Is it about screen time? Is it about needing to “feel” gaps in time between scenes? Or is it merely subjective dislike for the ship?
As I was pondering it, I went and tallied the screen time that a few of my favorite ships had in the first seasons of their shows: Cophine, Wayhaught, Raylla, and Stepril. (Yes, I have no life. Thank you, pandemic.)
I calculated only the time in which the two characters directly interact. I didn’t include time in which they spoke about each other or their relationship with other characters. For example, that means I didn’t include Waverly’s infamous “Do Chicks?” line to Wynonna, or Wynonna and Nicole’s “top shelf” scene in 1×07. Or Raelle angsting about Scylla for like three whole episodes (lol). Or Delphine conspiring with Leekie about Cosima. Or Sterling and Blair fighting about April. Etc. Etc.
Without further ado, here are the totals in screen time order (from greatest to least):
Stepril = about 49.5 minutes (about 9.8% of the first season)
Raylla = about 36.5 minutes (about 8.5% of the first season)
Cophine = about 23 minutes (about 5.5% of the first season)
Wayhaught = about 16 minutes (about 2.9% of the first season)
Now, obviously, quantity doesn’t necessarily mean quality. But I just find it interesting that some recent ships are being hit with the “rushed” criticism when other beloved ships got significantly less screen time when they started.
